Death of Michael Murphy

posted Jan 6, 2018, 10:42 AM by John Smith

It was with great sadness that we learned on Friday of the death of our Vice President Michael Murphy.

The statistics will show that Michael Murphy captained Tipperary to All-Ireland victory over Kilkenny in 1964, but one can only speculate as to what he might have achieved, had not a knee injury brought his career to a premature end in 1965 when he was only twenty four years of age.

A brilliant minor, Michael won All-Ireland medals at this level in 1956 and ’57 and he captained the team beaten by Limerick in 1958 Munster Championship. He made his senior inter-county debut against Wexford in winning the Oireachtas final in 1960. His championship debut came in 1963 after being on the extended panel in previous years.  Michael captained Tipperary to National League and All Ireland victories in the 1964. The league final was played in New York and this was one of the highlights of his career.

However tragedy was just around the corner and in the county semi-final against Roscrea that year he damaged his knee in a fall. He tried to recover but despite two operations and a variety of treatments, his career was at an end.   Michael won a total of 15 county championship medals (8 senior, 3 junior and 4 minor) with Thurles Sarsfields and Croke Cup and Dean Ryan medals with Thurles C.B.S.

The late Michael played a major role in the formation of Durlas Og in 1979 and he was one of the prime movers in the behind the scenes negotiations with the other clubs in the parish at that time.  He was a committee member and team mentor in the early years of the club.  Michael was deeply honoured to be Durlas Og Vice President, a position he held for many years, and he always took a keen interest in the affairs of the club and enjoyed their successes over the years.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Bridget, sons Paul, Aidan and Michael, daughters Fiona and Ciara and the extended family.

Academy and Under 8.

Training continues on Saturday morning at 10.00am.

Under 10

We travelled to Borrisoleigh on Friday evening last, for a challenge  game under lights.  We would like to thank Borrisoleigh for their kind invitation.  We enjoyed good, evenly matched, competitive games, with plenty of skill evident on both sides.

We will be training on Saturday morning at 10.00.

Under 12 and Under 14.

Training as advised by mentors.

Under 16.

Saturday 7 October saw the curtain come down on our U16 season when we defeated Cappawhite in the Co A final by 2 19 to 1 15.. But it also marked the end for a number of our players with their time with Durlas Og.

This group of players have given great service to Durlas Og and indeed they have been very successful with the club they joined as 7 or 8 year olds. In competition they won many titles. As U 12s they won the Mid Football, before losing out in the Co Final. 2015 was a fantastic year for them when as U14s they won the Feile Peil and represented Tipperary  in the All Ireland Feile Peil held in the South East. That year also saw them win the Co Football and Hurling double, a feat last achieved by Durlas Og in 1991.They rounded off their careers with the club by winning Mid and County titles at U16 Hurling this year.

They have been an excellent group of players, not just because of their successes, but also because of their great application to the games and their attitude to mentors, match officials etc while representing the club. They have been successful at both Hurling and Football and indeed are excellent role models for future generations of players from Durlas Og. So to Sean Collins, Kieran Costello, Joe Dwan, Jordan Fahy,  Cathal Hayes, Jack Lanigan, David Mawe, Eoin Purcell, Eoghan Ryan, Cian Stakelum, Patrick Stakelum and Peter Wall, we say Well Done, Keep playing Gaelic Games, and best of luck in your future careers. Go neirí an t-ádh libh and slán go fóill.

Date for the Diary:

December 1st: Medal Presentation night, Thurles Campus LIT. Further details to follow.

Under 8 and Academy
Training as advised by mentors.

There are only a few weeks left for training. If anyone would like to bring their children to the last few sessions of the year as a taster for next year, you would be more than welcome.  (Academy, Under 8 and Under 10)

Under 10
On Saturday, October 14th we will be taking part in a Monster Munster Go-Games tournament. It will take place in Doctor Morris Park,. We have entered 4 teams, 9 per team to ensure each boy plays all the games. This will be our final session of the year.

 Under 12 & 14
Training as advised by mentors.

Under 16
We won the U16 A Co Final when we defeated Cappawhite in an exciting contest in Holycross on Saturday. Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze we opened the scoring with a Jack Lanigan point. A goal from Liam McCormack gave us some breathing space and we lead by 1-11 to 0 7 at the break. A resilient Cappawhite fought back in the second half but with our defence holding firm we still lead by 7 with ten minutes remaining. However a Cappawhite goal reduced the margin and set up a very exciting finish. We dug deep and showed a lot of character in the closing minutes and it was fitting that it was our captain Jack Lanigan who had the final say when he crashed the sliotar to the net in the final minute.

Full time score Durlas Og 2 19 Cappawhite 1 15. There were great scenes of jubiliation as Jack lifted the cup to record our first win in this grade since 2011.

Congratulations
Well done to our under 16 on winning the county final on Saturday last, a hearty congratulations to Thurles Sarsfields on their win on Sunday.
