Clonakenny 5-07 Durlas Óg 'B' 0-02

The first U14 final down for decision last Thursday night resulted in a comfortable victory for Clonakenny over a spirited Durlas Óg side in Boherlahan. With conditions worsening as the match unfolded both sides started evenly enough. That was until Matthew O’Sullivan took a grip on proceedings scoring 1-01 on five and six minutes to settle his side. It could have been two goals instead, but a terrific stop by Christopher Carew which deflected over the bar ensured that didn’t happen. The Durlas Óg backs were under tremendous pressure with Diarmuid Ryan and O’Sullivan their tormentors, but Evan Moore and Sean Barrett were equal to the task and cleared the lines manfully. Heartbreak for them then on sixteen minutes when DeLacy Byrne’s sixty five found its way to the net for Clonakenny having skidded in on the wet surface.
Durlas Óg regrouped though and applied pressure up front where Jack Croke, Michael Stakelum and Darren Fahy were trying hard but still the scores wouldn’t come. At the other end O’Sullivan did an Artful Dodger impression as he picked the sliothar from Durlas Óg possession and fired a rocket to the net in a delightful move. Two points followed to leave Clonakenny commanding at the break 3-03 to the good.
First shot at the posts in the second half was for Durlas Óg but William Creedon was to see it fall shot into the keepers hand.  While down the field Diarmuid Ryan was unerring from frees, slotting over three from four of the Clonakenny second half point total. Cain Russell’s ground shot into the net for Clonakenny in the seventh minute effectively killed the game, though O’Sullivan still hit 1-01 from play later in the half, his third goal being the pick of the game as he majestically fired to the net in full flow.
Even so Durlas Óg never gave up and were justly rewarded for their endeavours as both Michael Stakelum and Seosamh Ryan pointed frees to register their sides scores late on.
Mid Bórd Treasurer, Tim Shanahan, proudly presented the cup to a fellow Clonakenny club mate, captain Eoin Nesbitt, with Seamus Doran, Doran Oil sponsor also in attendance.
