Review of the Year

We look back on another busy year for Durlas Og both on and off the playing fields.

JANUARY 
Our annual Progressive '25' Drive organised by Phil Brennan was held in the Sarsfields Clubhouse. The event was well attended.

Ger Donnelly who is our GAA Draw Co-Ordinator won 200 Euro in the Tipperary GAA Weekly Draw.

The Annual General Meeting was held in the Clubhouse. Fr. Lanigan Ryan celebrated Mass prior to the meeting. Chairman, Tom Meehan welcomed everybody to the meeting and he extended a special welcome to those that were attending for the first time. The Chairman thanked his fellow officers and all the coaches and mentors for their work throughout 2009. He was pleased that the Pat Stakleum Memorial Training Facility was officially opened and plans are being put in place for its utilisation over the weeks and months ahead. He also thanked all those that helped and supported the various events in conjunction with our 30th anniversary celebrations. Sean Coffey produced a detailed Secretary's Report outlining the progress of all our teams during the year together with the results of all their matches. Also included were details of all events in the club during 2009. Liam McCarthy, Treasurer, produced a comprehensive Financial Report detailing income and expenditure during the year. The report included details of the various grants received in respect of our development and the Treasurer thanked those that assisted with the various fundraising events during the year.

FEBURARY
The Adjourned Annual General Meeting was held in the Clubhouse. There was a large attendance present and mentors for the various age groups were elected for the year. It was agreed that managers would be appointed this year for all championship age groups. The managers appointed were - Under 12: Dinny Maher; Under 14: Paddy Moore; Under 16: Sean Corbett. 

Training resumed for all age groups.

The astro turf pitch was fully operational and became an integral part of our training and preparation.

MARCH
Durlas Og participated in the St. Patricks Day Parade. We were represented in the parade by the Under 8's and Under 10's.

Durlas Og following a semi final win over J.K. Brackens went on to defeat Loughmore/Castleiney by 0-10 to 1-5 to win the Mid Peil na nOg final.

Durlas Og held a Poker Classic in aid of the Haiti Appeal in the Anner Hotel. It was a great success for a very worthy cause.

APRIL
The Under 8’s and Under 10’s competed in Go Games Blitzes.

The Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 football championships commenced.

Durlas Og defeated Moycarkey/Borris by 1-8 to 1-4 in the Mid Feile na nGael final to add this title to the Mid Peil na nOg title won earlier in the season. We had a convincing 5-4 to 0-4 win over Drom/Inch in the semi final which was played on the same day.

MAY
Durlas Og were defeated by Clonmel Commercials by 2-9 to 1-4 in the County Peil na nOg semi final. Commercials had the advantage of the strong breeze in the first half and they led by 2-7 to 0-1 at the interval. We played much better in the second half and we outscored Commercials by 1-3 to 0-2. Despite our gallant efforts we had to give best to the South champions who progressed to the county final.

We were defeated by Drom/Inch in the Mid Under 12 'A' football semi final. Final score Durlas Og 0-3 Drom/Inch 0-4.

Durlas Og hosted a Munster Under 10 Go Games Blitz.. The visiting teams were Scarriff (Clare), Nenagh Eire Og and Drom/Inch. All those that took part received t-shirts and sliothars.

Our Under 14 hurlers defeated Toomevara by 2-10 to 1-0 in the County Feile na nGael final. The team gave a fabulous display to qualify to represent Tipperary in the All Ireland finals in Clare on 18th/19th/20th June.

We defeated Clonakenny by 3-4 to 2-5 in the Mid Under 16 'C' football final. The teams were level at the interval and two Durlas Og goals midway through the second half were to prove decisive. We were under tremendous pressure in the closing stages but our defence held firm to hold on for a memorable two points victory.

Durlas Og defeated Moycarkey/Borris by 2-6 to 0-8 in the Mid Under 14 'A' football final. Two first half goals were the decisive scores.

JUNE
Our Under 14's were defeated by Clonmel Commercials in the County Under 14 'A' football semi final.

Our Under 14's won two of their three group matches in the All Ireland Feile na nGael finals but unfortunately they missed out on qualifying for the semi finals. Our hosts, Gort, looked after us very well and contributed to a superb weekend where the boys showed all that is most admirable about them in their conduct both on and off the field.

JULY 
The Under 8's entertained Fingallians (Dublin) in Pairc na nOg and it was a most enjoyable day.

The Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 hurling championships were producing some top class matches.

Our annual Church Gate collection was held and we had a car park in Pairc na nOg for patrons attending the Munster Senior Hurling final.

AUGUST 
We were defeated by Holycross/Ballycahill by 2-2 to 1-3 in the Mid Under 12 'A' hurling final. We led by 0-3 to 0-1 at the interval. Two Holycross goals midway through the second half were decisive and despite a late Durlas Og goal we were two points in arrears at the final whistle.

Durlas Og defeated Drom/Inch by 1-8 to 1-4 in the Mid Under 14 'A' hurling final. We led by 1-3 to 1-1 at the interval having played with the advantage of the breeze in the first half. The second half was very close and two late points gave us a hard earned four points victory to record a magnificent Mid hurling and football double to add to the Mid Feile na nGael and Peil na nOg double won earlier in the season.

Our VHI Cul Camp was held and it was a great success. The participants had a most enjoyable week and they received excellent coaching from the team of coaches on duty, many of whom were former Durlas Og players.

Durlas Og were represented on the Tipperary Under 14, 15 and 16 hurling teams that played in the annual underage tournaments. Tipperary defeated Galway in the Tipperary Suporters Club All Ireland Under 16 final at Semple Stadium. Durlas Og players, Dylan Burke and Stephen Cahill lined out at left half forward and right corner forward respectively on the victorious Tipp teams. Congratulation to both Dylan and Stephen on winning All Ireland medals. Tipperary were defeated by Cork in the final of the Carrigdhoun tournament in Cork. Durlas Og's Jack Lineen, Conor Lanigan and Ronan Maher were members of the Tipp panel and Tony Lanigan was a selector. The Tony Forristal/Sonny Walsh Under 14 tournament was held in Waterford. Paul Sammon, Billy McCarthy and Faolain Linnane were members of the Tipperary 'A' panel while Thomas Skehan and Luke Kelly played on the Tipp 'B' team that was defeated in the final.

SEPTEMBER
Durlas Og extend ed its congratulations to our former players, Lar Corbett, Padraic Maher, Michael Cahill and Pa Bourke and the Tipperary team on their magnificent victory over Kilkenny in the All Ireland senior hurling final .

Durlas Og 'B' defeated Thurles Gaels by 4-6 to 2-7 in the Mid Under 16 'C' hurling final.

Durlas Og were very proud of our former players, Padraic Maher who captained the team, Michael Cahill, Kevin O'Gorman, Bill McCormack, Denis Maher and Kieran Morris and the Tipperary team on their victory over Galway in the All Ireland Under 21 final.

Our Under 14's were defeated by Nenagh Eire Og on a scoreline of 4-10 to 2-10 in the county hurling final. This was a thrilling final with very little between the teams throughout the match. We held a 1-5 to 0-6 lead at the interval. The second half was evenly poised with the teams level with five minutes remaining. Two late Nenagh goals secured victory for the North champions.

We defeated Holycross/Ballycahill by 0-15 to 1-5 in the Mid Under 16 'A' hurling final at The Ragg. Durlas Og led by 0-10 to 0-2 at the interval and despite Holycross reducing the deficit to four points midway through the second half Durlas Og pulled away in the final quarter to retain the title.

Our Under 12 'B' team were defeated by Clonakenny in the Mid Shield hurling final on Saturday.

OCTOBER
Durlas Og defeated Nenagh Eire Og by 1-19 to 1-15 in the County Under 16 'A' hurling final in Roscrea. This was our 13th title in this grade.

The Under 16’s ‘B’ team were defeated by Fr. Sheehys in the County hurling semi final.

The Liam McCarthy Cup visited Pairc na nOg.

Our Under 6’s, Under 10’s and Under 12’s played challenge matches against Moycarkey/Borris, Naas and Sarsfields (Cork) respectively.

Thurles Sarsfields retained the County Senior hurling title defeating Clonoulty/Rossmore in the final.

Lar Corbett won his second All Star Award and he also won the All Star Hurler of the Year.

NOVEMBER
The Under 8’s concluded their training for the year on a high note with the visit of Thurles Sarsfields players, mentors and very special guest - the Dan Breen Cup. It was indeed very satisfying to see these successful players coming back to the place where they started out on their hurling careers.

The Under 12’s commenced a six-a-side league on Friday evenings on the astro turf training pitch.

DECEMBER
Our annual Medal Presentation Night took in the Tipperary Institute. It was a great year for Durlas Og winning 2 County (Under 16 'A' hurling and Feile na nGael hurling) and 7 Mid titles (Under 14 'A' football, Peil na nOg, Under 16 'C' football, Under 14 'A' hurling, Feile na nGael, Under 16 'A' hurling, Under 16 'C' hurling). We also won Mid Club of the Year. Medals were presented to our victorious championship winning teams. Our Under 11's received their medals for winning the Sixmilebridge tournament. This was also a fabulous year for Tipperary hurling and a number of our former players featured on both the Tipperary senior and Under 21 panels. Our special guests at the medal presentation night were Padraic Maher, Pa Bourke, Michael Cahill, Patrick McCormack, Denis Maher, Kieran Morris and Kevin O'Gorman. They brought along the McCarthy Cup, Cross of Cashel Under 21 trophy and Dan Breen Cup.

John Smith was re-elected County Youth Officer at the County Convention.
