Durlas Óg scored a convincing win over Moycarkey-Borris in the Mid Under 14 ‘C’ hurling final (sponsored by Doran Oil Ltd.) at Kickham Park on Monday evening of last week.
Despite the large winning margin it was only in the second half that Durlas Óg pulled away from their opponents. Durlas Óg had much possession in the first half but they found it most difficult to penetrate a solid Moycarkey defence in which goalie Ciaran Kirwan was in outstanding form. Durlas Óg opened the scoring with a point from a ‘65’ by Brian Fallon in the 5th minute and the same player pointed another ‘65’ on the stroke of half time. In between Matt O’Brien pointed in the 12th minute but there was no further scores until the last five minutes of the half when Durlas Óg scored five points to give them a 0-7 to nil lead at the interval.
Moycarkey needed a good start to the second half but it was Durlas Óg that got the early scores and a Matt O’Brien goal gave them a commanding lead. Further Durlas Óg goals from Conor Murphy and substitute Kevin McLoughlin sealed a comprehensive victory against a Moycarkey team that tried their very best right up to the final whistle. A feature of the Durlas Óg play was that ten players got their names on the scoresheet and they scored some delightful points with classy corner forward Conor Murphy being their top scorer with 1-3. Midfielder, Paddy Dunican scored three points in an impressive display while Harry Fitzgibbon, Brian Fallon, Ciaran Shanahan and Matt O’Brien were always prominent. As already mentioned Moycarkey goalie Ciaran Kirwan was outstanding and he brought off a number of top class saves. He was well supported by Jack Hackett, John Cussen, Dylan Dorney and Marty Hayes.
